Guide

WooCommerce search not finding products? Here's why.

WooCommerce uses the standard WordPress search, which was built for blog posts. It looks for the exact words in titles and text, so shoppers who type a code, a misspelling or a word you didn't use get nothing back. Most fixes are quick once you know which problem you have.

Free plan: 500 products and 10,000 searches a month. No card needed.

Check what shoppers actually typed

Start with the searches, not the settings. If you have search analytics, sort searches with no results by how often they happen. If you don't, search your own store for a few product codes, a plural, a common misspelling and a color, and note which ones fail.

Common causes

Rule out hidden products and caching first, because no search plugin will show a product that WooCommerce itself hides.

  • SKUs and variation SKUs aren't searched, or only match when typed exactly
  • No typo tolerance: "hoodei" finds nothing even though you sell hoodies
  • Attributes (color, size, material) aren't part of the search
  • Products are hidden: drafts, private, out of stock with "hide out of stock" on, or catalog visibility set to shop only
  • Your theme's search form searches pages and posts, so products get buried
  • Caching or a security plugin serving a stale or blocked results page

Fixes you can make without a plugin

These help, but they don't add SKU matching across variations, typo tolerance or synonyms. That needs a search engine that indexes your catalog.

  • Put the words shoppers use into titles and short descriptions
  • Check each product's catalog visibility and stock settings
  • Use the WooCommerce product search block or widget, so results are limited to products
  • Clear the page cache after changing search settings

Fixing it with Gazelle Search

The free Gazelle Search plugin replaces the search bar with instant results that match titles and SKUs as shoppers type, and works without an account. Connecting the optional Gazelle Cloud adds typo tolerance, variation SKU matching, attributes, synonyms, "did you mean" and a results page with filters. Every search with no results shows up in the dashboard, so you can fix the rest with a synonym or a redirect rule.

Questions

Does the free plugin fix typos?
No. The plugin's local search matches title and SKU text as typed. Typo tolerance comes from Gazelle Cloud, which has a free plan for up to 500 products and 10,000 searches a month.
Will a search plugin slow my store down?
With Gazelle Cloud connected, searches run on Gazelle's servers, so your WordPress database isn't queried on every keystroke. If the service can't be reached, the plugin falls back to its local search.
